the hardest thing ive done on my e30
so this last weekend me and my father dicided to change the shift linkage in my e30 from evreything we looked up on it we could do it with out dropping the tranny.thats where the fun begins there is a knuckle on the back of the tranny that has the bushing in it for the shift selector rod this is held on to the tranny by a pin and a lock ring that sits about a half inch above the flex disk wich on top of that has a cover around it . got the lock ring off about three hours into the project only to find out the pin only comes out thru the bottom of the knuckle remember ive got less than a half inch from the bottom of the knuckle to flex disk cover .but somehow i get it out 6 hours into the project .so put all the new bushings and washers to the upper shift linkage and im ready to put the new knuckle on the tranny with a new pin and lock ring turns out you havte to slide the pin in thru the bottom also wont go thru top of knuckle ten hours into it i get thru the bottom some how just to find out pin wont go in all the way .so i pull it back out take to the bench just to find out the knuckle has been machined wrong .eleven hours into it i say screw it and bore it out so it goes in thru top and all the way in .get back under the car put it on the tranny .finish getting everything back together get in go thru all five gears works awsome no more play or throw nothing right so happy 13 hour job so proud right .go inside get cleaned up go to leave put it in reverse wich goes in so nice no hitting console anymore but i hear this rubbing sound like metal on metal turns out in reverse brand new shift rod touches the damn flex disk cover .why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! .so i look at my old shift rod and sure enough theres a groove in it from where the cover rubbed must done it along time ago becuse it dint do it before i changed it out .so i guess my options are to just deal with it and let the flex disk make new groove on the rod or start over .moral of the story is to drop the driveline if you do this job .oh and if you have any ideas on how fix the rubbing let me know thanks..
