Yes, that is correct. Just unscrew the bolt in the center of the cap, and remove. Doesn't matter what brand filter, they're pretty much all the same. Just make sure the kit comes with the 2 o-rings* and the drain plug washer. Changing oil on this car is straightforward, just like any other car. 5W-30 is BMW's recommendation for winter months, 15W-40 for summer. Conventional or synthetic? Up to you. Some newer engines will require synthetic, but yours doesn't.
*The small o-ring goes on the bottom tip of the filter housing bolt, the larger o-ring goes on the filter housing cap. You'll see them when you remove the filter. If you're anal about torque specs, both the filter cap bolt and the drain plug are 18ft-lb.
