my 2001 330's oil level sending unit went out. Sometimes the red oil light would come on. Randomly as you describe. I swapped it out (its a $75 part...ye they charge you 150. Who cares you have the warranty) and its good as new. No more oil light.

so, my guess would be oil sender.
