I would suggest have the dealer give you a copy of the repair order. also get a copy of the history of when they checked the previous time. This will protect you from any warranty issues.
The dealer will then be responsible to the situation. If you are low on oil, it will cause a ticking noise. I've seen some BMW's with under 10K miles needing up to 2 qrts oil.
